Helen (Poplett/Garrett) Phillips, of Galesburg, died at 7:03 a.m., Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at Cottage Hospital. Helen was born at home at 568 S. West Street in Galesburg, Illinois, on July 7, 1931, to Joseph Costa and Helen (Pugh) Creen. Helen graduated from Corpus Christi High School, Galesburg, Illinois in 1949. She married Jack Poplett (deceased) on June 9, 1951. She married Darwin Garrett (deceased) on April 20, 1996. She married Richard Phillips on July 26, 2003. He survives. Helen had a great love for reading and for all of her friends in her book club as well as her FOW group. Her greatest joy was her family and their gatherings together. She was a member of Corpus Christi Church where she served as a Eucharistic minister for many years. Those who are left to cherish her memory include her husband Richard, her brother Joseph Creen, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, her sister Patricia (d’Entremont) Beaudry (Bernie), Florence, Arizona, her two daughters, Kevin (Jerry) Bindel, Rogersville, Missouri, and Michaela (John) Reynolds, Monmouth, Illinois, her two sons Greg (Cheryl) Poplett, Madison Wisconsin, and Jeff (Chrystal) Poplett, Galesburg, Illinois, 8 stepchildren, Mary (John) Beasley, Galesburg, Illinois, Ruth Krause, Fort Collins, Colorado, Michael (Betty Jo) Garrett, Victoria, Illinois, Jim Garrett, Longmont, Colorado, Carolyn Garrett, Scottsdale, Arizona, Joanie (Norm) Koplin, Renton, Washington, Pacey Garrett, Avon Indiana, Phil (Denise) Garrett, Plainfield, Indiana, 5 grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter, and numerous step-grandchildren and great grandchildren. Helen was preceded in death by her husband Jack of 44 years, her husband Darwin Garrett, and one stepson Joe Garrett. Visitation will be 5:30 to 8 p.m., Friday, December 30, 2011 at Watson Funeral Home, with the rosary being prayed at 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Galesburg. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Galesburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society or the Galesburg Public Library.
