Alan Leslie “Butch” Fones, 81, of Galesburg, Illinois, was called home and passed peacefully surrounded by his immediate family on January 20, 2026 at 4:42 p.m.
Alan was born July 6, 1944 in Galesburg, the son of Albert George and Maxine Ione (Levene) Fones. Alan served in the US Army from April 1, 1968 until he was honorably discharged on March 31, 1970. He married Candice Williams on July 15, 1973 in Galva, Illinois. Butch is survived by his wife, Candy of Galesburg; one daughter, Nicole (Tony) Ommen of Bolingbrook, Illinois; and three grandchildren; Logan, Ashley, and Emily. Alan is also survived by two brothers, Brian (Susan) Fones of Colona, Illinois and Albert Fones of Glen Ellyn, Illinois; and two sisters, Jill (Ross) Sandercock of Naperville, Illinois and Joy (John) Kobialka of Middletown, New Jersey. Along with his parents, Alan was preceded in death by one brother, Dennis Fones.
Alan worked for several years at OMC Gale Products until its closure. He then turned his talents to auto body repair and automobile painting. He loved to ride motorcycles and competed in dirt bike racing for several years. Being mechanically inclined, Alan’s hobbies included working on motorcycles and repairing cars. He also enjoyed bowling and playing billiards.
Cremation will be accorded. A private family burial of cremated remains will be at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Galesburg.
