Alfred L."Mike" Lewis, age 77, of Oquawka, Illinois; passed away at 10:50 am on December 13, 2012 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa. He was born on December 4, 1935 and is the son of LeRoy W. and Harriett E. Jaeger Lewis. Mike was raised in Gladstone where he attended local schools and graduated from G & O High School in the class of 1953. He then attended Barber School in Silvis, Illinois and received his State of Illinois Barber's License. He then enlisted and was a Sp3 in the Army serving in Peace Time and was stationed in Panama. Mike married Betty Allen on August 23, 1957 in Burlington, Iowa and she is surviving. Mike began his work in Monmouth in the McCurdy and Landuyt Barber shop, where he worked for six years barbering. After that he was employed by the Burlington Northern Railroad as a machinist then as a boiler maker/welder. Mike was employed there for thirty years until his retirement on January 1, 1996. They then moved to Oquawka in 1983 where they have resided to the present day. Mike is a member of the Gladstone United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School and has been a youth leader. He for a number of years coached the Gladstone Womens Softball Team. He enjoyed gardening and doing yard work, and fishing at Gladstone Lake. Mike attended all of his grandchildren's sporting events. He is survived by his wife Betty Lewis of Oquawka, Illinois, one daughter Kimberly (Rod) Slover of Peoria, Illinois, two sons, Kirk (fianc? Maria) Lewis of Oquawka, IL and Kyle (Kimberly) Lewis of Industry, IL. A special Niece raised with the family Pam (Robert) Orrill of Peoria, IL is surviving. There are ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren also surviving. Mike's sister Betty Lou Allen of Oquawka, IL and brother Robert Lee Lewis of Mendota, IL are also surviving. A number of nieces and nephews are also surviving. His parents precede him in death. Services:Cremation has been accorded. A memorial service is planned at 11:00 am on Saturday Dec.22, 2012 at the Gladstone United Methodist Church. His family plans visitation with the family receiving friends from 9:00 to 11:00 am prior to the service at the church. A memorial fund is being established for the Gladstone United Methodist Church.
