Arthur D. "Art" Hanson, age 84, of Monmouth, Illinois passed away at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2008 at Cottage Hospital in Galesburg, Illinois. Art was born June 10, 1924 in Monmouth, Illinois and is the son of Henry and Martha Elizabeth Fay Fisher Hanson. Art was raised in Monmouth where he attended Monmouth Schools. Art enlisted in 1943 and entered the Army. He served in the European Theatre with the 146th Engineering Combat Group in Pattons 3rd Armoured Division. During this time Art earned two Bronze Stars, the American Combat Medal, and numerous service and combat ribbons. After the war Art returned and finished his High School Diploma at Monmouth High School in 1947. Art married Ellen J. Hanson on August 5, 1944, in Bastrop, Texas. She preceded him in death on March 16, 1999. A member of the 44th Division of the Illinois National Guard, Art was again activated to duty in the Korean Conflict in 1952. He is a member of the Marion B. Fletcher Post 136 American Legion. He also is a member of the Monmouth Masonic Lodge 37 AF & AM and the Western Illinois Shrine Club. In his working career, Art began as manager at Walters Brothers Grocery in Monmouth, and then was the manager of the Warehouse Market also in Monmouth. He then was manager at Barnes Brother Grocery of Monmouth for a number of years. Art then began a career in insurance as a Sales Representative and Underwriter for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company at the office in Galesburg, Illinois which he did for thirty years, retiring in 1988 as Senior Representative. For Metropolitan Life in sales, Art was a member of the Honors Club, the President's Club, and the Millionaires Club. In later years Art was a broker for Golden Rule Insurance from which he retired in 1991. He also was a member and Deacon of the former Ninth Avenue Presbyterian Church in Monmouth. Art also was a member of the cemetery board for the City of Monmouth on which he served many years. He also was a member of the Harding School Reunion Committee . As a hobby he liked wood carving and also enjoyed doing yard work and mowing the grass. Art is survived by two sons, John D. Hanson and Lois of Galesburg, Illinois and James D. Hanson of Monmouth, Illinois Grandchildren Corey Squire, Ted Bevenour, and Debi Himpsl ( Tom ) Great Grandchildren Taylor Smith and Andrew Himpsl Sister Jeanne Orwig & Chuck of Kewanee, Illinois Brothers Henry Hanson Jr. "Bud" & Eula of Bettendorf, Iowa and Richard Hanson & Mary also of Bettendorf, Iowa. His sister in law and close friend Katie Cross of Galesburg is also surviving. Numerous Nieces and Nephews also survive. Art is preceded in death by his parents, wife, two Sisters Jennie Caldwell and Louise Law, and his grandson Ty Squire Services:A funeral service will be at 10:30 am Thursday at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. Interment with Military honors will be in the Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery, Monmouth. Art's family will be present to receive friends at Turnbull Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm A memorial fund is being established. for either Jamieson Center in Monmouth or Shriner's Crippled Childrens Hospitals.
