Bessie E. Slover, age 81, of Oquawka, Illinois; passed away at her daughters residence in Burlington, Iowa on August 10, 2011 at 5:36 pm. Bessie was born on March 18, 1930 in Gladstone, Illinois and is the daughter of George and Edith Schmoldt Keever. She was raised in Gladstone where she attended school and graduated from G&O High School with the class of 1948. She was married to Alvin Keith Slover on September 25, 1948 in Oquawka, Illinois. He preceded her in death on March 17, 2008. Bessie was employed during the early 1960's at the Oquawka Bank for a time. She then worked as a waitress at the former "Alfreda's" restaurant in Oquawka and several other restaurants. Bessie also tended bar at both "Berneices" and "The Fisherman's Inn" among others. She was a member of the Oquawka United Methodist Church and more recently with her daughters has attended Faith Bible Church in Oquawka, and First Assembly of God Church in Burlington, Iowa. She is a member of the Oquawka Eagles Aerie #3629. Bessie enjoyed shopping, bingo, the dog races, and the slot machines. She most enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren, and her friends. Bessie is survived by her three daughters Nina ( Gale ) Hurt and Lori ( Mic ) Cochran both of Oquawka, Illinois and Linda ( Andy ) Diaz of Burlington, Iowa. There are eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She is survived by four brothers Lyle Keever and Lloyd ( Mary ) Keever both of Gladstone, Illinois, Albert and Milton (Janet) Keever both of Oquawka, Illinois. Her sister Ruby ( Jim ) Gaddis of Muskogee, Oklahoma also survives. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, one half-sister, and two half-brothers Services:A funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Monday August 15, 2011 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka, Illinois. Her family plans visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 prior to the funeral service at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Oquawka Cemetery. A memorial fund is being established for the Alzheimers Association.
