Bessie Whiteside, age 95, of Monmouth, passed away at 5:51 p.m., July 25, 2010 at the Galesburg Cottage Hospital in Galesburg, Ill. She was born on July 18, 1915 in Lancaster, Mo, the daughter of Charles C. and Henrietta Drake Lehr. Bessie was reared and educated in Lancaster, Mo and attended rural Reeves School. She married William P. Whiteside on November 12, 1933 in Glenwood, Mo, he preceded her in death in January of 1997. Bessie first worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown, Ia., and then worked at Bushes Motor Court in Rural media for several years. She later worked for 19 years at the Monmouth College Food Service. Bessie enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, canning, flowers, and her recipes. Surviving Bessie is one daughter, Roberta Stone (Richard) of Springfield, OH, three sons; Merle D. Whiteside of Roseville, William P. Whiteside, Jr. (Rosemary), of Roseville, Ill., and Steven L. Whiteside of Oquawka, Ill. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren, several great grandchildren, and one sister; Ella B. Eiffert of Downing, Mo. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sons, two daughters, and one sister. Services:A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 31, 2010, at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. Interment will be in Monmouth Cemetery. Friends may call on Saturday morning a hour prior to the service where her family will be present. A memorial fund has been established for the Arbor Day Foundation.
