Betty Lee Colwell, 88, of Galesburg, Illinois, died at 3:56 a.m. Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington, Illinois.

Betty was born May 27, 1937, in Galesburg, the daughter of Cecil David and Pauline Theresa (Cirimotich) Shepherd.

Betty graduated from St. Joseph's Academy and later from Galesburg High School, laying a foundation that propelled her throughout life. Following high school graduation, Betty married Charles Earl Colwell, Sr. on June 4, 1955 in Peoria. Their marriage brought forth four children, before he unexpectedly died on May 30, 1978.

Betty began her career in her younger years as a carhop at the Huddle Inn, a job that showcased her infectious smile and love for interacting with people. She later contributed her talents to Midwest Photo in Galesburg before dedicating herself to raising her children. In time, Betty returned to the workforce and ultimately retired from Butler Mfg.

Betty had many hobbies and interests. She cherished living in the country and caring for the land and property that her and her late husband built for their family. After her husbands passing, she single-handedly finished raising her two younger sons with a strength and conviction admired by all who knew her. Above all, Betty loved to spend time with her family and friends, creating lasting memories that will be cherished forever. Betty was a longtime member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Galesburg.

She is survived by her son, Anthony D. (Marilyn) Colwell of Galesburg; her daughter, Deborah L. Rathburn of Abingdon, Illinois; her grandchildren, Christopher Colwell, Alexis Hillier, James Rathburn, Michelle Batson, and Anja Anderson; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and her sisters, MaryLue (Oscar) Riley of Galesburg and Judith A. Norris of Galena, Illinois. Betty also shared a special bond with her cousin Larry "Butch" Asher of California, who was like a brother to her.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles, Sr.; her sons, Timothy Colwell, who passed on January 1, 1997, and Charles, Jr., on March 8, 2024; and her lifelong best friend, Stella Frakes.

Betty's legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, whose gentle spirit and joyful laughter will be deeply missed.
