Celia A. Tomlin, age 82, of Monmouth, Ill., passed away at 3:55 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2009, at OSF Holy Family Medical Center, Monmouth. Celia was born on October 21, 1926 in Lakeland, Ohio; and is the daughter of Vere and Gladys Darr Phelps. Celia came to Monmouth at the age of five and attended Monmouth Schools and Monmouth High School. She was married to her husband of sixty-seven years, Donald E. Tomlin on November 29, 1942 in Kahoka, Missouri. In her early years she volunteered as a "Blue Girl" at the former Monmouth Hospital. She also was employed by Chicago Motor Club in Monmouth for a number of years. Her main employment was at Warren Achievement School in Monmouth where she began as a volunteer in 1968 and became a teacher for many years into the early 1990s. Celia also was a member of Faith United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth, where she served as Deacon. She also taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Celia loved her garden and flowers and was a member of the former Monmouth Garden club serving as it's last president. For many years Celia served Warren County as an election judge. She and Don loved to travel and spend winters in Texas. Her greatest joy was her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Donald E.Tomlin of Monmouth, and her beloved dog "Tex" Three daughters Susan Nelson ( Dennis ) of Moline, Illinois; Nancy Tomlin of Indianapolis, Indiana; and Jaci Tomlin ( James Stracener) of Townsend, GA Three sons Donald Tomlin ( Debra) of Galesburg, Illinois; David Tomlin ( Paula ) of Indianapolis, Indiana; and Jim Tomlin ( Julie ) of Brookfield, WI Six Grandchildren Andrea, Christa, Colby, Tyler, Nick, and Michael Nine Great Grandchildren Erin, Christopher, David, Lucas, Kaylee, Erica, Marcus, Katie, and Sean. Celia is preceded in her death by her Parents and sister Elizabeth Wilkinson. Services:A memorial service for Celia is planned on Sunday May 24th, at Faith United Presbyterian Church of Monmouth, at 2:30 pm. Cremation has been accorded. No visitation hours are presently being planned by the family. Interment of her ashes will be in Monmouth Cemetery at a later date. Memorial funds have been established by her family for Faith United Presbyterian Church, or the Warren County Library, or the Western Illinois Animal Rescue. Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth is in charge of the arrangements.
