Cynthia Jean Smith, 84, of Galesburg, Illinois, died in the emergency room at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg, at 12:55 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.

Cindy was born February 16, 1941 in Peoria, Illinois, the daughter of Eugene Victor and Harriet Elizabeth (Beno) Monahan. Cindy married William Anthony Smith on June 17, 1961 at St. Mark Catholic Church, Peoria, Illinois. Cindy is survived by her husband of 64 years, Bill of Galesburg; four children, Tom (Peggy) Keller of Rock Island, Illinois, Kelly (John) Hazlitt of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Kathy (Chad) Wolber of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Kevin Smith of Galesburg. Cindy is also survived by her beloved seven grandchildren, Tony, Vinny, Gina, Morgan, Raymond, Brian, and Leo; and ten great grandchildren. Along with her parents, Cindy was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Ann Hartnett.

Cindy was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, was a past member of the Ladies of Mary, and helped with the plants and flowers around the church. She was a master gardener and worked for Hoerr’s Nursery in Galesburg until its closure. She then worked for a time at Hoerr’s Nursery in Peoria. She enjoyed hosting her annual plant and flower sale. Cindy was a talented artist and was a member of the Peoria Artists Guild. Her preferred medium was oil painting. She sold numerous pieces and won living room carpet in an oil painting competition. Cindy loved tending to her gardens at home. Her talents carried on to quilting and completing jig saw puzzles with Bill. She was also a voracious reader.

Memorial Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 21, 2025 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Galesburg. Father Jeffrey Stirniman will officiate. Private family burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Peoria, Illinois. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. Memorial contributions may be made to Illinois Cancer Society.
