Dale L. " Senator " Smith, 90, of Kirkwood, IL. passed away on August 7, 2014 at 5:30 am at the Monmouth Nursing Home in Monmouth, IL. Dale was born on April 25, 1924 on the family farm in rural Biggsville, Illinois. He is the son of Robert Miles and Ruth Pape Smith, Sr. He was raised in Biggsville where he attended school and graduated from the Biggsville High School in 1942. Dale was married to Doris June Rankin at the United Presbyterian Parsonage in Biggsville, on June 12, 1947 and she is surviving. Dale was a farmer all of his life helping with the family farm. He also was a part owner and assisted in the business of Smith Implement in Kirkwood, Illinois both in town and out on the highway. Dale was elected and served many years as Road Commissioner in Tompkins Township of Warren County. He retired from that in 1989. He is a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Kirkwood, IL for many years. He also is a member of the Antique Car Club in Iowa and Illinois. Dale also was a member and helped Pete Walker plan the roadways at Young's Lake. Dale is an active member of the Studebaker Drivers club, Incorporated and has owned and operated a yellow Jeepster in and around Kirkwood, IL for many years. He is survived by his wife, Doris Smith of Kirkwood, Illinois and two brothers, Donald H. (Sylvia) Smith of rural Biggsville, IL and James R. (Janet) Smith of Dubuque, Iowa. There are also numerous nieces and nephews surviving. He is preceded in his death by his parents and two brothers. Services:A funeral service will be at 11:00 am Monday, August 11, 2014 at the Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Illinois. A visitation is planned with his family receiving friends for the hour prior to the funeral, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. Interment will follow the service in the Biggsville Cemetery. A memorial fund is being established for either St.Jude's Children's Hospital or the Monmouth Nursing Home.
