David M. Smith, age 65, of Monmouth, Ill., passed away at 9:00 p.m. on Friday, September 4, 2009, at his residence. David was born May 18, 1944, the son of Maurice and Donnie Nichols Smith. David was raised in the Macomb area. He attended Macomb schools and graduated from Macomb High School in 1962. David enlisted in the United States Navy and served four years aboard U.S. Springfield as a Quartermaster, 2nd Class. He then attended Western Illinois University in Macomb, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Degree in Finance. He married Donna Gale Kaiser on August 10, 1968 in Barrington, IL. The couple spent 10 years in Salt Lake City, UT and was employed by Envirotech in Sales. The last 20 years he spent working for Western Illinois University as a Certified Purchasing Officer. David was elected a 2nd Ward Alderman for the City of Monmouth, serving two, four-year terms. David has served on the Finance and Public Safety Committees of the Council. David was a member of The First United Methodist Church where he was an active member in the choir. He loved the game of golf; and designed and built custom golf clubs. David is survived by his wife Donna of 41 years, and their three daughters; Jennifer Smith Fisher (Scott) of Colorado Springs, CO, Amanda Smith Arp (Doug) of Beaverton, OR, and Sarah Smith of Monmouth, IL. He is also survived by four grandchildren; Claire, Catherine, Evelyn, and David. Services:A Memorial Service and Military Honors will be on Friday, September 11 at 4:00 P.M. at First United Methodist Church, in Monmouth, IL; with fellowship to follow. A memorial fund is being established for either the First United Methodist Church or Pancreatic Cancer Research. Cremation has been accorded. Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth is in charge of the arrangements.
