Dean E. Johnston

Dean E. Johnston, age 66, of Monmouth, passed away on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at his residence in Monmouth. Dean was born on December 18, 1945 in Monmouth, Ill., and is the son of Russell H. and Bertha Rose Peterson Johnston. He was reared and educated in Roseville and graduated from Roseville High School. Dean served in the United States Navy. He married Bonnie VanSkike on October 17, 1965 in Monmouth. Dean was a laborer and worked at several area business, including Admirals in Galesburg, Wells Pet Food in Monmouth, Alexander Lumber, and Auto Zone in Monmouth. He was an avid NASCAR fan, and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Dean was a member of the Marion B. Fletcher American Legion Post 136 in Monmouth. He is survived by his children; Connie Lucas (Bud) of Bethany, OK, Wylie Johnston (Melissa) of Monmouth, Kenneth Johnston of Purcell, OK, Russell Johnston of Monmouth, and Jennifer Smock (Clint) of Monmouth. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 1 step grandchild, and 3 step great grandchildren, and two brothers; Bill Johnston and Charles Johnston of Roseville, Ill.. He was preceded in death by his parents and one step granddaughter. Services:Cremation rites will be accorded. A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. His family will be present to receive friends an hour prior to the service at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the American Legion Post 136 in Monmouth.
