Donald W. Kettering age 81, of Monmouth, beloved father, husband and friend, passed from this life on Monday, April 02, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer. The son of John Ray and Florence Louise Weston Kettering, he was born on July 11, 1930 in Monmouth, IL. In 1956, he married Phyllis Lanphere and rejoiced in being the father of two children, Ann Kettering Sincox (David) of Holt, MI and Laura Kettering Everly (Tom) of Avon, IL. He was both a Monmouth High School and a Monmouth College graduate. Don was an active member of the community and well known for his beautiful tenor voice. He sang in the First Christian Church choir for ever 50 years as well as serving as a deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Youth Sponsor, and Chairman and Secretary of the Board. He was a dedicated employee, with roles at Bowman Shoe Company, Monmouth College and Martin and Clark Co., Inc. He volunteered on numerous committees, most recently serving for several years as treasurer of the Maple Leaf Community Concert Series and the Lamp Lighters Sunday School class. A veteran of the Korean War, Don served in the 44th Division Artillery of the Illinois National Guard in Headquarters Battery and as an Administrative Assistant to the Commanding General. He was a Sergeant when he was discharged. He was an avid gardener and excelled in container gardening, even teaching a class on methods and tips on creating beautiful flower pots. Don was also an excellent cook and loved experimenting to make new and inventive dishes. Don delighted in his three grandchildren, Tad Sincox (Knoxville, TN), Abby Sincox (Kansas City, MO) and Audrey Everly (Avon, IL). He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Esther Ann Sincox. Services:A funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 6, 2012 at the First Christian Church in Monmouth. Interment will be in Warren County Memorial Park in Monmouth. His family will be present to receive friends Thursday evening from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. Memorial can be made to the First Christian Church in Monmouth in Don's memory.
