Donald W. Stansell, age 89, of Monmouth,Illinois; passed away at 3:20 am on July 14, 2011 at Rosewood Care Center in Galesburg, Illinois. He was born on June 22, 1922 in McNabb, Illinois and is the son of Harry S. and Gladys Phillips Stansell. Don grew up on a farm near Lostant, Illinois and attended local schools and graduated from Lostant High School. He then attended the University of Illinois in Champaign. Don entered service during World War II and served as a Sargent in the U.S.Army in Company I of 119 Infantry, the 3rd Division. Don fought across France, Belgium, Holland, and into Germany where he was wounded in the Seigfield Line on the initial attack on Germany. He was awarded the purple heart and a Combat Infantry Badge. Don began work farming with his father and did some carpentry locally. He then became a Country Companies agent in Knox county for eight and half years. He then became agency manager in Warren County for Country Companies for twenty-two and half years retiring in 1987. Don enjoyed golf and the Monmouth Country Club and was a hole-in-one member. He is a long time member of First Lutheran Church in Monmouth where he served on the church council and ushered and was active in the affairs of the church. Don was past president of the Lostant Alumni Association, past commander of the Lostant Post 173 American Legion, and member of the Marion B.Fletcher Post 136 American Legion in Monmouth. He is a member of the Disabled American Veterans, VFW order of the purple heart, the Lostant Masonic Lodge 870 AF & AM He was a former Monmouth Rotarian, and during the Monmouth Sequecentenial was revenue chairman. He was a past president of Monmouth Exchange Club and a past president of the Monmouth Area Chamber of Commerce. He was an avid Cubs fan and devoted father who loved his family and friends. Don is survived by his two sons Mark (Gayle) Stansell of Knoxville, Illinois and Robin (Debbie) Stansell of Fountain Hills, Arizona. There are four granddaughters, Ashley (Derrick) Main of Knoxville, Illinois, Amanda Stansell of Knoxville, IL; Chelsea Stansell of Flagstaff, Arizona; and Megan Stansell of Fountain Hills, AZ. There is one sister Lorraine Stall of Indianapolis, IN. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Services:A funeral service will be on Tuesday July 19, 2011 at 11:00 am at the First Lutheran Church in Monmouth, Illinois. A masonic service will be at 5:00 pm Monday evening at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, followed by family visitation until 7:30 pm Interment with military honors will be at Warren County Memorial Park. A memorial fund is being established for First Lutheran Church or the OSF St.Mary's foundation.
