Dorothy Kathryn Stubbs, 92, formerly of Oquawka , Ill. , died peacefully in her sleep at 7:55 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, at home at the Lighthouse at Silvis assisted-living facility in Silvis , Ill. Dorothy was born Feb. 28, 1918, in Oquawka, the daughter of John and Ethel (Thompson) Dillon. As a child, she lived in Muscatine , Iowa ; Galesburg , Ill. ; and Abingdon , Ill. ; and Oquawka, where she lived most of her life. After meeting at an April Fool's Day dance, Dorothy married Leslie "Sport" Stubbs on June 5, 1937, in Monmouth , Ill. They lived in Camby , Calif. , where her husband worked in a logging camp. Then, in 1943, they returned to Oquawka and purchased a farm, where she stayed home as a housewife and mother. Dorothy was a member of Rozetta Baptist Church in Rozetta Township in rural Henderson County, Ill. She enjoyed telling and writing stories, reading, quilting, sewing, crocheting, embroidering, weaving rag rugs, playing Pinochle and other card games, visiting with family and friends, traveling, watching her "stories" on TV and going to McDonald's. In their younger years, she and Sport participated in bowling leagues. They also were known for doing wallpapering for folks around the Henderson County area. Dorothy also participated in the Parent Teacher Association when her children were in school. Surviving are one daughter, Kathy L. Yadon (and Donald) of Rock Island , Ill. ; one son, Jerry L. Stubbs (and Janet) of Early, Texas ; five grandchildren, Leslie R. McClaine (and Merle) of Davenport , Iowa ; Michael Stubbs (and Georgia ) of Moline , Ill. ; Richard Stubbs (and Felicia) of Bangs, Texas ; Kay Luna (and Mark) of Taylor Ridge, Ill.; and Diana Hines (and Kyle) of Rock Island. Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; one niece, Becky (Stubbs) Tee and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; infant daughter, Shirley; daughter, Sandra K. Smith-Lynch; one grandson, Justin Stubbs; one sister, Doris (Dillon) Stubbs Rehm, and one brother, Vernon "Son" Dillon. Services:Funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, 2011, at Rozetta Baptist Church. Burial will be in Oquawka Cemetery. The family will be present to receive friends at the church at noon, prior to the service. A memorial fund is being established at Rozetta Baptist Church. Turnbull Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
