DuWayne Brooks, age 70, of Monmouth, Illinois, passed away at 1:15 A.M. on Monday, February 19, 2018 at his residence in Monmouth. He was born on November 21, 1947 in Monmouth, Illinois, the son of Leland Luval and Eliza Lucille (Mitchell) Brooks. DuWayne was raised and educated in Monmouth, where he graduated from Monmouth High School. He proudly served his Country during the Vietnam Conflict with the United States Navy. After his service, DuWayne attended Western Illinois University, Milton College for three years, where he obtained his BA in History. Lastly, he attended Western Illinois University where he obtained his Master of Science Degree in College Student Personnel. DuWayne held many positions over the years which include; Associated Director of Student Activities, University of Louisville, Administrative Assistant, Office of Academic Services at Western Illinois University, Personnel Management Training Coordinator for Popeye's Chicken, Denver, CO, Residence Hall Director, University of Illinois, Assistant Director of Residence Life for Minority Students, University of Illinois, Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Counselor, Kettle Moraine Treatment Centers, Milwaukee, WI, and Student Services Specialist/Advisor, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He also worked as the Director of Multicultural Student Services and African American Studies, Bradley University, Peoria, IL, and Director of Multicultural Services, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, North Chicago, IL. DuWayne was lecturer and teacher, speaking and many venues throughout he career. He was known by his family, friends, and acquaintances as a man of unparalleled compassion, never ending love, and a gift of making people challenge themselves to strive for excellence. He was an lifelong musician, singing and playing for many events in the area. DuWayne will be missed deeply by anyone that ever met him. DuWayne is survived by one sister, Denise Brooks of Monmouth, IL, one brother, Dennis (Nancy) Brooks of Monmouth, IL, and Dennis Mitchell Brooks II, God son Jermaine Peoples of Galesburg, IL, God-son, James Hightower of Monmouth, IL, nephew Alex (Rachel) Spangler and their children; Xander, Alexsha, and Shabie of Aledo, IL, and niece Donna (Clarence) Dillard of Columbus, OH. Many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends also survive. He is preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Teresita Brooks, and one brother, Leland Brooks, Jr.
