Evelyn M. Holmes

Evelyn Marie Lee Holmes passed away early on November 28, 2016 in Escondido, CA, where she had spent the past few years with her daughters. Evelyn was born on June 3, 1919 to Charles B. and Iva H. (Boyd) Lee in Roseville, Illinois. She was welcomed by her two older sisters Louise and Violet. She spent her childhood living in Roseville and graduated from Roseville High School in 1937. In 1939 she married Herbert Holmes and moved to Monmouth. She and Herbert had three girls, Sharon, Sylvia and Sandy. Her sister Violet married Mac Holmes, Herbert's brother. The families enjoyed the unusual situation in which their children were "double cousins." The entire Holmes clan lived in the same neighborhood in Monmouth and spent so much time together that the cousins felt like more siblings than cousins. Evelyn worked for Formfit in Monmouth until it closed; and she later went to work in the cafeteria at Central Junior High School. She worked there for eighteen years, before retiring. She was a friendly person and formed lifelong friendships with her co-workers and neighbors. After retirement she spent many winters in southern California with her daughters. She was preceded in death by her parents, both her sisters, and her beloved husband Herbert. She is survived by her three daughters: Sharon Brandmeyer, Sylvia Kwok (John) and Sandy Zimmerman all of Escondido, CA. She also leaves nine grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren, three nieces, one nephew, and many great nieces and nephews. Funeral Service Evelyn's Christian faith was always an integral part of her life after giving her heart to Jesus at the age of nine; and she was an active member of Park View Seventh-day Adventist Church in Galesburg. Funeral services will be held in Escondido, CA on January 7, 2017. A funeral service will be held in Monmouth at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 2:00 pm. A private family burial will be held at Warren County Memorial Park in Monmouth.
