Faye Louise Christian Perry, age 95, of King's Daughters and Sons Retirement Home, Burlington, formerly of Oquawka, Illinois, passed away at 4:50 A.M. on Tuesday, October 31, 2018 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa. She was born on may 24, 1923 in Oquawka, Illinois, the daughter of Charles Henry and Daisy Alice (Olson) Ruberg. Faye attended school in Oquawka, graduating High School in 1941. In 1957, at age 38, she graduated from Quincy College with a Bachelor of Science in Education. In 1961 she received her Master of Education degree from the University of Illinois, and later attended Western Illinois University for her Supervisory Certificate. She also attended many writing workshops in the Elder Hostel programs at various Universities throughout the Midwest. In 1942 Faye married Lemuel E. Christian who was killed in action during the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium during World War II. In 1954 she married Richard K. Perry who preceded her in death in 1978. Faye taught 3rd Grade for the Quincy Public Schools for 13 years. She was also an accomplished writer, publishing two books about growing up on the Mississippi River during the depression. The books, "River Rat, What's That" and "Barefoot by the River" were published when she was 90 and 93 years old. Faye enjoyed nature and bird watching, reading, traveling, Scrabble, and crossword and word search puzzles. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Senior Center in Oquawka, helping others in the community, and was a 4H Leader. She was a longtime member of the VFW Auxiliary, a lifetime member of the Goldstar Wives of American and of the Dependents of theVerterans of the Battle of the Bulge. During WWII She was a plane spotter with the Civil Air Patrol, identifying planes to protect the Ordinance Plant. Fay is survived by one daughter, Karen (James) Nichols of Camp Point, IL, two granddaughters; Su (Stan) Keith and Sarah (Enzo) Cullotta, and one great-grandson, Mason James Cullotta, nieces and nephews; David (Susie) Ruberg, Michael (Young) Ruberg, Tim (Teresa) Ruberg, James (Becky) Ruberg, Charles A. (Mary Anne) Buettner, Sharon Anders, Lori (Rick) Bohnenkamp, and Patricia Lidell. She is preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, and six siblings; Mary R. Buettner, Thomas R. Ruberg, Ruth E. Mayo Coover, Walter F. Ruberg, Ruby J. Ruberg, and Eugene D. Ruberg, and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service is planned for 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka, Illinois. Her family plans visitation from 10:00-11:00 A.M. prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Oquawka Cemetery following a brief graveside prayer. Luncheon will follow at the Faith Bible Church. Memorials may be left to the Great River Hospice House or the King's Daughters and Sons Retirement Home.
