Fred W. Elliott, age 94, of Monmouth, passed away at 7:45 a.m., Monday, November 21, 2011 at his residence in Monmouth. He was born on October 23, 1917 in Lenox Township of Warren County; he is the son of Everett and Hariett Brooks Elliott. Fred attended rural schools in Lenox Township. He served in the Army National Guard 123rd Field Artillery and was activated during World War II and served in Germany and France. He was wounded in battle and awarded the Purple Heart. Fred married Alma M. Bowles on April 23, 1945 in Roseville, Ill.; she preceded him in death on January 7, 2003. Upon his return from service Fred was a grain and livestock farmer on the Elliott family farm until 1955. He was then employed as a driver for Brown, Lynch, and Scott in Monmouth, and then drove for Frank Cavanaugh at Cavanaugh Trucking. He last drove and worked for Stockland, then Riverland FS until he retired. He was a member of the 1st United Methodist Church in Monmouth, the Marion B. Fletcher American Legion Post 136 and the J.W. Clendenin V.F.W. Post 2301. Fred enjoyed gardening and woodworking. Fred is survived by three daughters; Jean Mann (Robert) of West Point, Ia., Sharon Elliott of Monmouth, Patty Johnson (Glenn) of Monmouth, two sons; William Elliott (Kathy) of Indianapolis, In., and Denis Elliott and Emily of Bartlett, Tn. Also surviving are fourteen grandchildren; Jeff and Jason Mann, Daniel, Christopher, and Matthew Elliott, Allison Cregger, Erin Berry, Melissa Flower, Ashley Gridley, Jenny Nicol, Eric Nicol, Ryan Sweeney, Jessica Sweeney, and Sharron Sweeney. Also surviving are great grandchildren; Madisyn and Kamryn Gridley, Rebecca and Abigail Creeger, and Joshua and Lucas Berry. Also surviving is one brother Ralph Elliott (Frances) of Monmouth. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son Randall, and one daughter Debra Sweeney Services:A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 26, 2011 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. Interment with military honors will be in Warren County Memorial Park in Monmouth. His family will be present to receive friends on Friday evening from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Turnbull Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established for the 1st United Methodist Church in Monmouth.
