Gary E. Runge, 84, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 5, 2026 in Chesapeake, Virginia. He was born on July 23, 1941, in Davenport, Iowa, to Francis Jule Runge and Nellie Mae Tipton. After his mother later married Wayne Hunter, Gary was raised in a home that valued hard work and loyalty—qualities that shaped the man he became.
On December 28, 1961, he married the love of his life, Josephine Rae “Jo Rae” Fancher. Together they built a life filled with laughter and countless cherished memories. Their marriage was a true testament to commitment and quiet strength. Gary was proud to be a member of Alpha Lodge No. 155, A.F. &, A.M., of Galesburg, Illinois. He retired from United Parcel Service and later enjoyed many years working part-time with his good friend—and baseball rival—Dan Olson at Olson’s Paint Spot. A lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan, Gary rarely missed a game and loved talking baseball with anyone who would join him.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Donna Filman, Stephen Runge, and Kay (and Elvin) Lyon. He is survived by his beloved wife Jo Rae, his son Gary (Cindy) Runge of Smyrna, Tennessee, and his daughter Debra (“Mick”) Ashby of Virginia Beach. He was a proud grandfather to Jake (Mary) Runge of Peoria, Lindsay (Jason) Lankford of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Hannah Runge of Smyrna, Tennessee. He also leaves behind his cherished great-grandchildren Isaac, Elinor, Arthur, and Henry, who brought him immense joy.
