George Leland Brooks Jr., age 83, of Monmouth, passed away at 12:50 p.m., Sunday, September 18,2011 at the Heartland Health Care Center in Galesburg, Illinois. He was born on December 31,1927 in Monmouth, Ill., the son of George Leland and Mae Snell Brooks. He attended Roseville schools. He married F. Beverly Schlaf on July 16,1950 in Monmouth. George was a Corporal in the Army National Guard from 1949-1955 and served 13 months in Korea. He worked for Western Stoneware, Martin Motors and was owner and operator of a Shell gas station in Larchland,Ill. He retired from Monmouth Implement. He very much enjoyed his family and friends and meeting friends for coffee everyday. He served 21 years with the Warren County Auxiliary Police. George was a member of the Monmouth Lodge # 37 AF&AM, a life long member, Deacon and Trustee of First Christian Church in Monmouth. He was an avid camper and gardener. George is survived by his wife Beverly Brooks of Monmouth, one daughter Carolyn L. Butler of Monmouth, two sons; David Brooks (Jenny) of LaSalle, Ill., and Kyle Brooks of Monmouth. Also surviving is one brother Wendell Brooks of Kirkwood, Ill., five grandchildren; Austin, Crystal, Ryan, Conchetta, Renee, and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bob Brooks, and one great granddaughter. Services:A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 23, 2011 at the First Christian Church in Monmouth. Interment with Military honors will be in Monmouth Cemetery. Friends may call and hour prior to the funeral at the First Christian Church where his family will be present to receive friends. A memorial fund has been established for the First Christian Church in Monmouth, Strom Center, or a donors choice.
