George E. Sipes, age 81, of Monmouth, Illinois; passed away at 10:15 am at Cottage Hospital in Galesburg, Illinois on December 6, 2011. George was born February 28, 1930 in Doniphan, Missouri and is the son of Richard L. and Beulah Robinson Sipes. George was raised in Doniphan until the age of eight, when the family moved to the Warren and Mercer County area where he attended Joy High School. George joined the National Guard 44th Division and while a member was activated to active duty in 1952 serving during the Korean conflict. George was married to Janet O. Conway on September 6, 1953 at Fairview Center, Illinois. George first was employed in the Warehouse of Gamble Skogmo in Monmouth, for seven years. George also farmed in grain and livestock all of his working career in Warren County until retirement in 1996. George also has been a long-time and active member of Fairview Center United Methodist Church near Monmouth, IL. The United Methodist Men, and the Marion B Fletcher Post 136 American Legion. George also coached Jr. Sherriff's League softball for many seasons. Surviving is his wife Janet Sipes of Monmouth, Illinois and three sons, Eldon (Cindy) Sipes and Lane (Toni) Sipes both of Monmouth, IL , and Keith Sipes of Round Rock, Texas. There is one daughter, Deborah Fry also of Monmouth, IL. Grandchildren: Christopher (Julie) Sipes of Oquawka, IL; Shane (Megan) Sipes of St.Louis, Missouri; Shannon Sipes of Chicago, IL; Samantha and Cody Sipes both of Hutto, TX; Andy Waterman of Brockport,IL; and Nick Waterman of Monmouth, IL. and four great grandchildren. Two sisters are surviving Wanda Wade of New Boston, IL; and Katie (Pete) Lundeen of Kewanee, IL; and one brother Richard (Bonnie) Sipes of Galesburg, Illinois. Preceding him in death are his parents, one brother, two sisters, one granddaughter, and one great granddaughter. Services:A funeral service will be on Saturday December 10, 2011 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Illinois at 10:30 am. His family plans to receive friends at Turnbull Funeral Home for the hour prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:30 am. Interment with military honors will be in Lenox-Union Cemetery near Monmouth, IL. His family requests no flowers, and would prefer memorial donations be made to Fairview Center United Methodist Church.
