Gloria Joy Hooper, age 83, of Monmouth, passed away at 5:03 a.m., Sunday, November 15, 2009, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg. She was born July 26, 1926 in Monmouth, the daughter of Theodore and Dorothy Higgins Clarke. She was reared and educated in Monmouth, and graduated from Monmouth High School in 1944. Gloria married Arlie N. Hooper, Sr., in Memphis, Tenn., on June 12, 1944, where he was stationed at a Naval Base. He preceded her in death January 18, 1989. Gloria worked at Monmouth College as a secretary and bookkeeper for over 17 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She served as Worthy Matron twice in Monmouth Chapter # 277 Order of the Eastern Star, once with her father and again with her husband. She is a 50 year member of the order, and past member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and belonged to the VFW #2301 Auxiliary. Surviving Gloria is her son Arlie Hooper, Jr., of Alexis, and two grandsons, Ted Hooper of Chicago, Ill., and Gary Hooper of Murphysboro, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Services:In accordance with her wishes, there will be no visitation or service. Cremation has been accorded. Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth is in charge of the arrangements.
