Goldie A. McKelvey, age 96, of Monmouth, passed away at 11:20 a.m., Friday, November 19, 2010 at the Monmouth Nursing Home. Goldie was born August 6, 1914 n Ottawa, IL. and was the daughter of Leon V. and Goldie A. Covell Gonigam. She was raised in Ottawa where she attended local schools and graduated from Ottawa High School in 1932. She then completed nurse's training at Galesburg Cottage Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. She then completed training in Chicago at Chicago Lying In Hospital in 1941. Goldie also did graduate work in nursing at Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg, Illinois. She was married to George W. McKelvey on May 11, 1941 at her parents home in Ottawa, Illinois. He preceded her in death on October 11, 1981. Goldie was a registered nurse at Monmouth Hospital and then Community Memorial Hospital spanning a career of thirty-nine years. She was a life member and very active in the Post 2301 VFW Auxiliary, having served twice as it's president. She also served as President of VFW 8th District, was State VFW Assistant Musician, and a member of the Illinois State Presidents Club. She also was a member of the local Post 2301 VFW President's Club and president of the Past District President's Club. Goldie was a member, former Chaplain, and former President of the Illinois Prairie Colony of New England Women. She was a member holding numerous offices including Chairman and Reagent at the State level of NSDAR in Illinois. She served as president of the Harding School P.T.A. when her children were small. She also was a member of Gerlaw Christian Church where she served as musician for Sunday school and was a member of the Challenger Sunday School Class. Goldie was known for her knitting of Christmas stockings for many families and their children over many years. Surviving Goldie are two daughters, Susan (Bill) Glover of Dixon, Illinois and Pat (Bill) Taylor of Kirkwood, Illinois. There are six grandchildren William (Jill) McKelvey in West Liberty, OH; Bruce (Tami) McKelvey of Cable, OH; Michelle (Kevin) Countryman of Freeport, IL; Ann (Eric Schoonover) Taylor of Peoria, IL; Sara Greenlief of Kirkwood, IL; and Rebecca (Dave) Anderson of Kirkwood, IL. Two step grandchildren, Debra (Carl) Rispoli and John Beasoliou, both of Peoria, AZ. Seven Great Grand Children, Matt McKelvey of West Liberty, OH; Alyssa Vicker, Emma Greenlief, and Taylor Anderson, all of Kirkwood, IL, Korin (Tom) Karst of Cherry Valley, IL. and Natalie and Ryan Countryman, both of Freeport, IL. There are two Step Great Great Grandchildren, Emily and Garrett Karst, both of Cherry Valley, Illinois. Goldie's very special friend survives Barbara Conn of Monmouth, Illinois. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son William and his wife Linda, one sister Elizabeth, her brother Leon, and two infant great grandsons. Services:A funeral service will be at 10:30 am on Wednesday November 24, 2010 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, IL. A VFW Auxiliary service will be on Tuesday evening at 5:30 pm at Turnbulls prior to her family's visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 pm also at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery. A memorial fund is established for a Galesburg Cottage Hospital Alumni Association.
