H. Doreen Helm

H. Doreen Helm, age 91, of Monmouth, Illinois; passed away at 4:40 am on Saturday May 4, 2013 at Monmouth Nursing Home. Doreen was born on January 15, 1922 in rural Gerlaw, Illinois and is the daughter of Harry B and Hannah M. Erlandson Martin. She was raised in Gerlaw where she attended rural school and then graduated from Monmouth High School with the class of 1939. She then attended Augustana College in Rock Island and completed Moser School of Business in Chicago, Illinois. Doreen married Jack J. Helm on November 17, 1944 in Peoria, Illinois and he preceded her in death on September 25, 1992. Doreen worked more than twenty years in the A.S.C.S. office here in Warren County working with aerial mapping and soil topography. She and Jack were life long members of First Lutheran Church in Monmouth, where she taught Sunday School. She also was active in several ladies circles in the Gerlaw and Monmouth area. Her husband and family were her primary love and interest. She loved playing the piano and organ. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, knitting, and reading. Surviving Doreen is one son, Steven (Susan) Helm of Scottsdale, AZ, and one daughter, Patrice Holland of Monmouth, Illinois. She has four granddaughters, Laura (Kevin) Flanagan of Pleasanton, CA. Emily Helm of Phoenix, AZ. Kim (Greg) Timerman of Metamora, IL. and Juliette (Jeff) Tinder of Springfield, IL. There are five great granddaughters Lydia Flanagan, Hattie Timerman, Kelsey, Hannah, and Cami Tinder, surviving. Doreen's sister in law, Elaine Eckles of Moline, IL also is surviving. She is preceded in her death by her parents, husband, son in law, John Holland, and four sisters. Services:Per Doreen's request, a private family service for the interment of her ashes is planned. Cremation was accorded. A memorial fund is being established for First Lutheran Church of Monmouth, IL.
