Elaine Speck, age 78, of Monmouth, Illinois; passed away at OSF St.Mary's Medical Center in Galesburg, at 6:00 am on Sunday May 23rd, 2010. Elaine was born on January 19th 1932 in Ft. Madison, Iowa and is the daughter of Hiram F. and Hazel P. Carlson Newton. She was raised in Niota, Illinois where she first attended "Frame" rural school and then graduated from Dallas City High School. She then attended Western Illinois University as an education major. After her schooling Elaine first taught briefly at the rural school near Niota. She began work as cashier for Benner Foods in Monmouth. She married William Howard Speck on July 2, 1960 in Dallas City, Illinois. She then began a career with the National Bank of Monmouth first as a bookkeeper, then teller, and finally serving as Head Teller for the bank. She retired after thirty-two years in 1995. She was a longtime member of Heritage United Presbyterian Church where she served as Elder, Deacon, and Trustee. She also sang for a time in the church choir. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles. Surviving Elaine is her daughter Kay (Wayne) Reid of Colona, Illinois; and two sons Richard (Tara) Speck of Monmouth, Illinois; and Donald (Patricia) Speck of Billings, Montana. She has seven grandchildren Jessica, Erica, Amber, Caleb, Harley, Carter, and Kian. There are four great grandchildren also surviving. Her sister Lou Ann (Ron) Leonard of Niota, Illinois also survives. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a great granddaughter "Ireland". Services:A funeral service is planned on Friday May 28th, at 10:00 am at the Heritage United Presbyterian Church of Monmouth, IL. Interment will be Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery. Her family plans a visitation at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth on Thursday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Memorial funds have been established for either Heritage United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth, or the Warren County Relay for Life.
