Hattie P. Garrett, age 73, of Monmouth, Illinois; passed away at 5:45 pm on August 8, 2014 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois. Hattie was born on May 18, 1941 in Monmouth and is the daughter of Harry S. and Lillie E. Schultz Brentise. Hattie attended local Monmouth Schools through the eighth grade. She was married to Donald E. Garrett on June 2, 1960 in Little York, Illinois. He is surviving. She began work at "Country Kitchen" on South Main in Monmouth, Illinois. She then was employed for a time at the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant in Middletown, Iowa. Hattie then was the owner and operator of "B.J.'s Grill" on North 1st in Monmouth, Illinois and later on South 11th Street. Hattie in later years has been employed at Lincoln Elementary School where she has been a teacher's aide, room monitor, crossing guard, a school bus aid, and is known as " Hattie " to the children. More recently also she has assisted her Brother, Ed Brentise and Dee in the operation of the Maytag Laundry, here in Monmouth. Hattie enjoyed flowers and gardening, baking cookies, and most of all her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Donald E. Garrett, Sr. of Monmouth; three daughters, Donna Koehler of Mesa, Arizona; Stacy Cooper of Biggsville, IL; and Wendy Brown of Monmouth, IL. Two sons survives, Donald E.(Mary) Garrett of Monmouth, IL; and Nathan Garrett of Elmwood, IL. There are ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Two sisters survive, Lucy Johnson of Abingdon, IL and Sarah (David) Stotler of Galesburg, IL., and two brothers, Ed (Dee) Brentise and Chuck Brentise, both of Monmouth, Illinois. She is preceded in her death by her parents, one daughter, Pam, one grandson, J.J., and two sisters, Ellen and Bessie. Services:A funeral service will be at 10:30 am on Thursday, August 14, 2014 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Illinois. Cremation will then be accorded. Her family plans a visitation at the funeral home on Thursday from 9:30 am to 10:30 am prior to the funeral service.
