Hazel I. Shimmin, age 86, of Monmouth, Illinois; passed away at 12:20am on Saturday June 5th at the Roseville Rehab Center in Roseville, IL. She was born on June 25, 1923 in Boston, Massachusetts, and is the daughter of Wilbur W. and Isabelle Binns Rutledge. As a child she moved to Monmouth and attended Harding school and Central Junior High and graduated from Monmouth High School in the class of 1944. Hazel married John H.Shimmin on August 27, 1942 at the Fairview Center United Methodist Church, near Monmouth. She first was employed as a clerk at the former " Kimbles " dime store. She then worked at Monmouth Hospital as a secretary and bookkeeper for a time. She then was a clerk at Brown, Lynch, Scott department store also in Monmouth. She was also an Avon Representative in the area for forty years, receiving numerous awards and was a member of the President's Club. Hazel is a long time member of the Fairview Center United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school, served six years as Youth Director, served as a district officer for the church, and was a member of United Methodist Women. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, and quilting for family and friends, and loved to go Square Dancing. Among her other activities, she was a devoted farm wife with her husband, and enjoyed spending the winter months in Mesa, Arizona. Surviving Hazel is her husband John H. Shimmin of Monmouth, and two sons Curtis (Sandra) Shimmin and Stephen (Ruth Ellen) Shimmin, both of Monmouth, Illinois. There are five grandchildren Jonathan, Kathleen, Matthew, Stephenie, and Henry; and four great grandchildren Bailey, Jennifer, Sara, and Kora. One sister also survives, Eloise Taylor and one brother, David Rutledge, both of Monmouth, Illinois. A number of Nieces and nephews also are surviving. She is preceded in death by her parents, and one brother Mike. Services:A funeral service will be at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth on Friday June 11th at 10:30 am with interment in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery. Her family plans visitation on Thursday evening at the funeral home from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Memorial funds are established for either the Jamieson Community Center or Fairview Center United Methodist Church.
