Helen E. Pape

Helen Elizabeth Pape, age 92, of Monmouth, Illinois passed away at 7:45 am on June 20, 2013 at the Legacy Estates in Monmouth. She was born on January 25, 1921 in McDonough County, Illinois, the daughter of Carl and Lilly (Jones) Howard. Helen was raised in Good Hope and attended local schools and graduated from Blandinsville High School. She then attended nursing school in Chicago, Illinois. She married Charlie Paul Smith on May 25, 1940, and he preceded her in death on June 25, 1959. She later married Ralph T.Pape on August 27, 1964 and he preceded her in death on March 10, 1976. Helen first worked for Spurgeons Department Store in Monmouth where she was a clerk. She then worked in the Quad Cities as a medical assistant at a physicians office for a time. She also performed physicals for various insurance companies in the area. Helen also night sat with patients at Monmouth Hospital, and provided in home health care for the elderly. Helen loved to read, crochet, paint and loved gardening in her own garden. She enjoyed the company of her companion dog "Buster". Helen was a member of the Immanual Baptist Church here in Monmouth. She is survived by one daughter, Beverly Cox of Monmouth, Illinois and one son, Larry L. (Dixie) Smith of Woodhull, Illinois. Also surviving are four granddaughters; Cynthia (William) Robinson of Monmouth, IL; Brenda (Matthew) Carver of New Richmond, WI.; Lori Smith of Galesburg, Illinois and Teresa Smith of Sherrard, IL Two grandsons survive, Jody (Bridgette) Smith of Colorado Springs, CO and Kevin Cox of Monmouth, IL. Three step-daughters; Barbara (Wilbur) Wigant, Betty (Stuart) Steward, and Bonnie Talbott, all of Cambridge, IL Also surviving are numerous great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, two brothers, and one infant son. Services:A funeral service is planned for Monday, June 24 at 10:30 am at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. Calling hours are planned from 9:30-10:30 prior to the service on June 24, 2013 at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the Warren County Memorial Park in Monmouth. A memorial has been established for Immanual Baptist Church or the Western Illinois Animal Rescue.
