Helen C. Richey

Helen C. Richey, age 92, of Monmouth, Illinois; passed away at 8:30 pm on January 30th, at the Monmouth Nursing Home. Helen was born March 25, 1919 in Gerlaw, Illinois and is the daughter of Andrew and Laura M. Neilsen Bertelsen. She was raised in the Little York and Gerlaw areas and attended rural schools. She attended Little York High School and Monmouth High School and graduated with the class of 1938. She was first married to William Nicol and later was married to John F. Richey. He passed away in 1995. Helen first worked in Los Angeles, California during the War and did housekeeping privately. She later moved to Texas for a time and had various employments and came to Monmouth to work at Warren Achievement School in the lunch program and in Respite Care. She worked there over twenty years. Helen loved to laugh, visit, and tell stories among her friends and family. She always made everyone else feel good. She is suvived by her son George Nicol ( Marty ) in Texas and her daughter Laura Simpson (Delbert) of Monmouth, Illinois. There are nine grandchildren, Erin, Trina, Trent, Jordan, Kim, Kristy, Jay, Dion, and Zach; two great grandsons, and three great grnddaughters. Her brother survives, Don Bertelsen (Mary), and three sisters, Mary Millar of Monmouth, Betty Ballard (Richard) of Little York, Illinois, and Martha Marclevitz (Carl) of Grand Rapids, Michigan. She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and one son LaVal. Services:A funeral service will be on Monday February 6, 2012 at 10:30 am at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Illinois. Interment will be in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery. Her family plans visitation with the family present for an hour prior to the service Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 am A memorial fund is being established for Monmouth Nursing Home.
