James Richard "Dick" Work

James Richard "Dick" Work, age 90, of Biggsville, passed away at 2:15 p.m., Thursday, December 11, 2008, at the Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab in Stronghurst, Illinois. Dick was born on September 20, 1918 in Ft. Morgan, Colorado. He was the son of Robert Marshall and Roberta Fleming Gibson Work. Dick graduated from Monmouth High School in 1938. He then attended Iowa State University and Monmouth College. Dick enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country during World War II. He married Wilma Elizabeth Sterett on June 12, 1943 in Pensacola, Florida. She preceded him on May 4, 1971. Dick spent most of his life farming in the Henderson County area. He was a charter member of the Biggsville American Legion Post 1176. He was also a member of the TKE Chapter at Monmouth College. Dick was a former director of the Tri-County Cattle Feeders, a former member of the Henderson County Zoning Board, and he was a member of the Biggsville United Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and a Trustee. Dick is survived by two sons; Jim Work of Biggsville, IL, David Work and Fran of Gladstone, IL, two grandsons; Eric Work and Katie of Burlington, IA, and Alex Work of Gladstone. Also surviving is one sister, Mary Theis of Long Wolf, OK, great-granddaughter, Audrey Work of Burlington, and a number of nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Dr. Emma Burt, brothers; Raymond Work and Robert M. Work, Jr., sisters-in-law, Minna Work and Evelyn Work, and brothers-in-law, Charles Burt and Tom Theis. Services:A graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 15, 2008, at Biggsville Cemetery in Biggsville. Friends may call on Sunday at Turnbull Funeral Home in Biggsville after noon until 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to either the Monmouth College Library or the Henderson County Ambulance Service.
