John F. Hagrelius, age 89, of Swedesburg, Iowa and formerly of Monmouth, Illinois; passed away at Arbor Court Nursing Home in Mt.Pleasant, Iowa on April 5th, at 10:35 pm. John was born on March 3, 1922 in Galesburg, Illinois; and is the son of Frank L. and Edna B. Sharp Hagrelius. John was raised in Galesburg, where he attended local schools and graduated from Galesburg High School. John married Dora Mae Adams on January 2, 1945 in Galesburg, Illinois. She preceded him in death on February 14, 1996. John entered the Navy during World War II and served as Boatswains Mate on a sub chaser in the Pacific, off the coast of South America. After service John began work for the C.B. & Q railroad and continued a forty-one year career with Burlington Northern Railroad from 1940 to 1981. John served as the general foreman of locomotives in the Roundhouse in Galesburg, Illinois. He retired at the age of 59. In earlier years he was active in scouting and all of the events of his son and daughter. He was a member of Immanual Baptist Church in Monmouth for many years. Surviving is one daughter Sally (Gary) Anderson of Swedesburg, Iowa and one son James ( Marilyn) Hagrelius of Princeton, Illinois. There are two granddaughters Stacy (John) Peterman and Lisa (John) Maskill and two grandsons Jonathan (Kristin) Anderson and Matthew (Claire) Hagrelius. There are ten great grandchildren Lauren, Joshua, Samuel, Matthew, and Mary Peterman; Elaina, Eden, and August Anderson; and Hannah and Peter Hagrelius. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, and sisters Florence. Conover, and Rosalie Tuthill, his brother James Hagrelius. Services:A graveside funeral service with military honors will be on April 16th, 2011 at Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery in Monmouth at 1:30 pm, followed by interment. His family plans to receive friends at Turnbull Funeral Home on Saturday 4/16 from Noon and until the hour of service. A memorial fund is being established for Immanual Baptist Church of Monmouth.
