John L. Hollis

John L. Hollis, age 80, of Monmouth, Illinois passed away at Heartland Health Care Center in Galesburg, IL on Monday, January 9, 2017. He was born on June 6, 1936 in Elizabeth, Indiana, the son of Lloyd Owen and Margaret Allean (Bowling) Hollis. John attended grade school in Indiana and after moving with his family to Seaton, attended Seaton High School. John proudly served his Country, serving as a Staff Sgt. in the United States Army from 1956-1959. He was previously married to Glenda Adeane Wetterow. John was a co-owner of the Hollis Texaco Station on South Main Street in Monmouth, IL. John has been employed as a mechanic for most of the Ford Dealerships here in Monmouth, namely Woods, then Woods Harrison Ford, Harrison Ford, and City Ford. John later opened and operated the Hollis Garage for a number of years in Oquawka, Illinois until his retirement. John always enjoyed gardening, hunting, and being a farmer. He often attended the men's breakfast at Faith Bible Church in Oquawka, Illinois. He is survived by his children, L.Owen (Angie) Hollis of Monmouth, IL, Jim (Sherry) Hollis of Kirkwood, IL, Mike (Rita) Hollis of Monmouth, IL, Ron (Teresa) Hollis of Monmouth, IL, Cindy Shamblin of rural Monmouth, IL; and Tricia Holloway, in the state of Indiana. There are eight grandchildren surviving and numerous great and great, great grandchildren also surviving him. John's brother, Merle and Kathy Hollis survive and live in Marco Island, Florida. Visitation John's family plans to receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at the funeral home. Funeral Service A funeral service is planned for 10:30 AM on Friday, January 13, 2017 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Illinois. Interment with Military Honors will be at Monmouth Cemetery. A memorial fund is being established for Western Illinois Animal Rescue.
