Karen Sue (Smith) Kleine, age 84, of Galesburg, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 18, 2026.
Born in Centralia, Illinois, to Arno Dale Smith and Julia Elizabeth (Arnold) Smith, Karen lived a life defined by faith, compassion, and devotion to her family. She graduated from Centralia High School a year ahead of her future husband, Gerald "Butch" Kleine, who was always quick to remind her that she was older.
Karen went on to graduate from St. Luke's School of Nursing and became a Registered Nurse, dedicating her life to caring for others. Her lengthy and distinguished career in healthcare reflected both her professional skill and her compassionate heart. Throughout the years, she served patients and families through the Community Action Agency in Centralia, obstetrics departments in Carbondale, Illinois, and Huntsville, Alabama, the Knox County Nursing Home, Dr. Bortz's Dental Office in Galesburg, Dr. Irene Caruso’s EyeCare, and ultimately as Director of Nursing at Marigold Nursing Home in Galesburg. In every role, Karen's commitment to helping others was evident, and she earned the respect and admiration of coworkers, patients, and families alike.
Karen shared 62 loving years of marriage with her beloved husband, Butch. Together they built a family grounded in love, faith, laughter, and unwavering support. Her greatest joy was being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Some of Karen's happiest moments were spent in the bleachers and grandstands watching her boys play sports and later cheering on her grandchildren as they competed. Through those years she developed friendships and connections that lasted a lifetime with teammates, parents, coaches, and families. She never met a stranger, and it seemed that wherever she went, she left with a new friend. Her warm smile, genuine interest in others, and welcoming spirit made people feel comfortable from the very first conversation.
A strong Christian throughout her life, Karen accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior while in the fourth grade. This life-changing decision became the foundation of her faith and a guiding force throughout her life. Her trust in God shaped her character, directed her actions, and provided strength through every season of life.
Karen was also known for her wonderful sense of humor and her ability to laugh at herself. Even while facing the challenges of Parkinson's disease, she maintained her wit, grace, and positive outlook. She taught those around her that joy can exist alongside hardship, and that a smile can often carry us through difficult days.
Karen is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Gerald "Butch" Kleine; her sons, Christopher Kleine (Dorothy Gregg) and Jeremy Kleine (Molly); her grandchildren, Kelsi (Ryan) Brackett and Kannon Kleine; her great-grandson, Cooper Brackett; and her nephew, Gregory Norman.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arno Dale Smith and Julia Elizabeth (Arnold) Smith; her brother, Arno Dale Smith, Jr.; and her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Butch Leininger.
Karen's legacy is found in the lives she touched as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, nurse and volunteer as a Sunday School Teacher at the First United Methodist Church in Galesburg, where she was a member for over 50 years, and her time as a volunteer with the Galesburg Rescue Mission where she was presented with the Distinguished “Reverend Sylvester Sanford Award” in 2024. She cared deeply, loved generously, and served faithfully. While her family mourns her passing, they find comfort in knowing that the faith she embraced as a young girl has now led her to rest in the presence of her Savior.
Her memory will forever be cherished, her example remembered, and her love carried forward by all who were blessed to know her.
