Laura Benner Moffet passed on peacefully Christmas morning in Oakland, California. A resident of Monmouth for over 30 yrs, she raised three sons on what was then the outskirts of town ... East Harlem Ave. Born in Puerto Rico where her father was the Chancellor of the University of Puerto Rico. She grew up on the campus of the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana as her father was the Dean of the School of Education. She married fellow graduate David R. Moffet and moved to Monmouth where Mr. Moffet joined the family business; The Review Atlas. As one of a handful of Democrats in town she found solace in returning to education, earning a Master's Degree at Western Illinois University. She then joined the faculty of Monmouth College before moving on to Carl Sandburg Community College. After her marriage ended she made the bold move to southwest Florida becoming a faculty member of Edison Community College. She built a house on Sanibel Island where she lived until retirement. Moving to the California Bay Area she lived in Mill Valley and Oakland Hills. She leaves behind her beloved three sons John of Martha's Vineyard, MA., Stephen of Wheaton, IL., and Howard of Oakland Hills, CA. Son Peter succumbed to pneumonia as an infant. She is also survived by her brother Tom and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews, and brother-in-law, Hugh. No local services are being planned. A private family memorial service is planned for the springtime in California. Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth is handling local arrangements.
