Leslie H. "Sport" Stubbs, age 95, formerly of Oquawka, Illinois; passed away at Noon at Trinity West in Rock Island, Illinois on May 22, 2008. "Sport" was born September 10, 1912 in Oquawka, Illinois and is the son of John Benjamin and Nancy Raines Stubbs. He attended the "Harmonty" rural school in Henderson County. Leslie was married on June 5, 1937 to Dorothy Kathryn Dillon in Monmouth, Illinois. They first lived in Camby, California where Leslie worked in a logging camp for a number of years. They returned to Oquawka in 1943 and purchased the farm near Oquawka where he has been a Grain and Livestock farmer all of his life in Henderson County. Sport was a charter member of Hendco Hills Country Club and a life member of the Henderson County Farm Bureau. He is currently a member of Rozetta Baptist Church. Leslie has served as an election judge and Tax Assessor in Henderson County. He is an avid Golfer and loved bowling. He liked to shoot pool and was a duck hunter. He also liked trap shooting. He and Dorothy enjoyed traveling across the United States and playing Pinochle and cards. He enjoyed dirt track and auto racing and watching "Cardinals" baseball on T.V. Dorothy and Sport also were known to do wall papering for folks around the area. Surviving are his wife Dorothy Stubbs of Oquawka, one daughter Kathy L. Yadon and Donald of Rock Island, Illinois, one son Jerry Stubbs and Janet of Early, Texas, five grandchildren, Leslie R. Young of Oquawka, Michael Kent Stubbs and Georgia of Silvis, Illinois, Richard James Stubbs and Felicia of Bangs, Texas, Kay Luna and Mark of Taylor Ridge, Illinois and Diana Yadon of Rock Island. Also surviving are eight great grandchildren, one great great grandson and a number of other relatives. Leslie is preceded in death by his parents, one daughter Sandra K. Smith-Lynch, one grandson, Justin Lee Stubbs, two sisters and two brothers. Services:A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at the Rozetta Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Oquawka Cemetery. The family will be present to receive friends at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.prior to the service. A memorial fund is being established for the Rozetta Baptist Church.
