M. LaVaughn Jones, age 94, of Monmouth, IL.; passed away at 11:25 pm on March 18, 2014 at the Rosewood Care Center in Galesburg, Illinois. She was born on July 10, 1919 in rural Bethel township of Shelby County in Missouri and is the daughter of Virgil E. and Opal M McCanon Lindsey. She was reared and educated in local schools and graduated from Kirksville High School with the class of 1937. LaVaughn married Edward W. Jones on August 1, 1939 in Lancaster, Missouri. He preceded her on May 25, 1998. LaVaughn was a member of First Methodist Church and also it's United Methodist Women. She is a long time member of the American Legion Post 136 Ladies Auxiliary and it's Girls State and it's Constitution and Bylaws committee, where she served as finance committee chairman. LaVaughn also held numerous other chairs in the Legion, to include Poppy chairman, National Security, and the Ways and Means committee. LaVaughn was employed at Foreman Company of Monmouth as a binder for fifteen years, and also worked part-time at Monmouth Grain and Dryer. She lastly was cook at the Marion B. Fletcher Post 136 of the American Legion. LaVaughn is survived by her sons, Kenneth B.(Ruth Ann) Jones of Gerlaw, Illinois and Timothy D. (Shelley) Jones of Monmouth, Illinois. Seven grandchildren, Pammy Sue (Doug) Nakane of Woodridge, IL; Jill Ellen (James) Kratzer of Acworth, GA; Tammy Woller of Moline, IL; Shelly (Kurt) Smith of Kirkwood, IL; Melissa K. Jones and Angie Whetstine of Galesburg, IL; Missy (Tim) Bewely and Brian Williams, both of Monmouth, IL. There are nineteen great grandchildren and one great, great granddaughter. Her sister, Virgil Lee Engle of Shelbyville, MO and brother, Max (Deene) Waite of Poplar Bluff, MO. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, one granddaughter, Paula K. Jones, two sisters, Vera LaVern Patterson and Hazel Arment, and two step brothers, Rex Waite and Blaine Waite. Services:A funeral service will be at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Illinois on Saturday March 22 at 10:30 am conducted by Reverend Jim Epperson. Her family plans visitation at Turnbull Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm receiving their friends. Interment will be in the Monmouth Cemetery on Saturday after the service. Memorial funds have been established for either Alzheimer's or the American Legion Auxillary Post 136.
