Marlene L. Cokel, age 76, of Monmouth, passed away at 2:06 p.m., Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at the OSF Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth. She was born on September 27, 1936 in Kirkwood, Ill. and is the daughter of Creed and Olive Ross Roark. She was reared and educated in the Monmouth area and attended Monmouth schools. Marlene married Maurice Cokel on August 22, 1953 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Monmouth. She worked at Gale Products in Galesburg for a time, and then worked at Monmouth College, and lastly she worked at Lowes in Galesburg, Ill. Marlene loved cooking, canning vegetables from her garden, and watching Western movies. Marlene is survived by her husband, Maurice Cokel of Monmouth, one son Garry Cokel (Susie) of Monmouth, four daughters; Sylvia Cokel of Spanish Fort, AL, Cheri Cokel-Kiper of Industry, Ill., Brenda Shaw (Tom) of Monmouth, and Laurie Cokel of Birmingham, AL. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and three brothers. Services:As per Marlene's wishes, her body was donated to science. A celebration of life will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 20, 2012 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. Her family will be present to receive friends and hour prior to the service at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the American Heart Association.
