Mary M. Smith, age 86, of Monmouth, IL. passed away at Monmouth Nursing Home on Tuesday October 29, 2013 at 7:20 pm. Mary was born on February 20, 1927 in rural Warren County and is the daughter of Terrance W. and Frances Burns Gavin. Mary attended Farmer's Academy and was #1 in her class of one. She then attended and graduated from Monmouth High School class of 1945. She married Robert M. Smith on April 3, 1976 at Immaculate Conception Church in Monmouth, and he passed away on March 16, 1997. Mary first worked with Leonard Twomey at Illinois Bankers Life Company, then she began working for Love,Beal and Pratt as the personal secretary for Ed Love and then Marion Beal. Her entire career then was as legal secretary for the law firm until her retirement. She is a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Monmouth and it's Altar and Rosary Society. She is a nurturing member caring for most of her family and is known as "Aunt Mary ". She really enjoyed coffee with friends and family at the Dairy Queen and at McDonalds. She is survived by two sisters, Jean Hopson of Roseville,Il. and Lucille "Dolly" Lefort of Monmouth, IL. There are five nieces, Linda (Dan) Doyle of Monmouth,IL., Theresa (Tom) Scott of Moline, IL., Kathy Armstrong of Monmouth, IL,, Julie Hopson of Coal Valley, IL., Jane Hopson of Downs, IL. There are seven nephews, William (Darlene) Gavin of Crystal Lake, MN., John (Brenda) Gavin of Polo, Il.., Mark (Peggy) Irey of Corona,Ca., Mike (Charlene) Irey of Cypress,Tx., Jerry (Trish) Irey of Orion, Il., Clark (Lindy) Irey of Pacifica,Ca., and Todd Lefort of Monmouth, IL. Mary is also survived by numerous great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents,husband, one brother and one sister. Services:Mass of the Christian Burial will be on Saturday November 2, 2013 at 11:30 am at the Immaculate Conception Church in Monmouth. A Rosary service will be recited by her family at 4:45 pm at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth on Friday evening November 1, 2013. Her family will receive friends for visitation following the Rosary until 7:00 pm. Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. A memorial fund is being established for the Immaculate Conception School and Monmouth Nursing Home.
