Mitchell LeRoy Heatherly, age 77, of Rock Island, Illinois and formerly of Monmouth, passed away at 12:40 am on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. LeRoy was born on March 8, 1936 in Monmouth and is the son of Samuel and Beulah Sanders Heatherly. He was raised in Monmouth and attended local schools. He enlisted in the Marine Corp and served as corporal from 1952 to 1956. He was previously married to Lois J. Chambers. Mitchell was first employed at International Harvester for a number of years. He then was an abuse counselor for drugs and alcohol for fourteen years in the Mercer County area. His last employment was as a shipping clerk for Medical Disposables in Marietta, Georgia. LeRoy enjoyed bowling, and professional boxing. His greatest interest was in his children and grandchildren. Surviving LeRoy are two daughters Debra Heatherly of Davenport, Iowa and Rose ( Herston) Heatherly of Denver, Colorado and three sons, Mitchell Heatherly II of Milan, IL; Samuel (Josephine) Heatherly of Marietta, GA; and Michael (Anna) Heatherly of Rock Island, IL. His former wife survives, Lois Heatherly in Lebanon, OR. and seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter. A number of nieces and nephews also are surviving. LeRoy is preceded in death by his parents, son Darrin Eugene Heatherly a grandson, Joshua Derry; and three brothers and four sisters. Services:A graveside funeral service with military honors, will be on Wednesday June 5, 2013 at the Monmouth Cemetery at 11:00 am. Friends may call on Tuesday and Wednesday at the funeral home and no family hours are being announced. A memorial fund is being established for Alcoholics Anonymous.
