Phyllis Shauman, age 91, passed away at 9:08 A.M. on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab in Stronghurst, Illinois. Phyllis Jeanne (Swarts) Shauman was born December 18, 1927 in Kirkwood, Illinios, the only child of Otto James and Lucy Ellen (Armstrong) Swarts. She graduated from Kirkwood Township High School, Peoria School of Business, and attended Carl Sandburg Jr. College. She also took continuing education classes at Monmouth College and the University of Illinois. Phyllis' first job was as secretary for Bowman Brothers Shoe Company, Monmouth, IL; as Extension Secretary in Henderson County; as Manager of Nutri/System in Burlington, IA; as Personnel Administrator at Wells Division, Monmouth, IL, Employee Relations at Caterpillar Tractor Company, Burlington, IA, and retired from Warren Achievement Center, Monmouth, IL in 1992. Phyllis served on the Board of Directors of the Mothers' Association, University of Illinois; Oak Lane Nursing Home; Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Monmouth, IL, Henderson County Fair Board, as well as serving her Church, The Biggsville United Presbyterian Church in many capacities. Phyllis served the Church as Trustee, Deacon, Elder, Stated Clerk of Session, Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of the Ladies Aid, Secretary/Treasurer of the Ladies Aid, and President of the Presbyterian Women. She also spent many hours working in the kitchen and dining room at her church serving various meals. Following the devastation of Hurricane Andrew in 1992, Phyllis worked as a volunteer at the Presbyterian Ministry Center of Hurrican Relief in Homestead, FL. She married Gerald Hugh Shauman at the home of her parents on August 15, 1948 in Kirkwood, Illinois. Gerald was killed in a farm accident on August 15, 1990, their 42nd wedding anniversary. Survivors included two sons, Kenneth Hugh (Vickie) Shauman of LaGrange, OH and Kevin James (Sandy) Shauman of Kirkwood, IL. Three grandchildren: Sandra Lynn (Paul) Moraco of Grafton, OH, Kevin Ryan Shauman of Biggsville, IL, and Eric James (April) Shauman of Ottumwa, IA. Five great-grandchildren are also surviving: Morgan Marie Moraco and Paige Nicole Moraco of Grafton, OH and Jeffery James Shauman, Izabella Faye Shauman, and Christopher Gauge Shauman of Ottumwa, IA. Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and daughter-in-law. Funeral services are planned for 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at the Biggsville United Presbyterian Church in Biggsville, Illinois. Visitation is planned for 5:00-7:00 P.M. on Friday evening at the Church. Interment will be at Center Grove Cemetery in Kirkwood, Illinois. A memorial fund is being established for the Biggsville United Presbyterian Church.
