Reverend John F. Grimes, age 84, of Monmouth, Illinois passed away at 12:25 pm at his residence in Monmouth, on Wednesday November 23, 2011. John was born on March 11, 1927 in Pittsfield, Illinois the eldest of seven children born to John W. and Rachel Miller Grimes. Reverend Grimes was raised in Pittsfield and graduated from Pittsfield High School. He then attended Carthage College. John became a minister at the age of seventeen, and in earlier years he was licensed with the Methodist Church and later ordained by the Association of Fundamental Churches, Inc. He was offered ordination in the Old Catholic Church but chose rather to minister inter-denominationally and has ministered in approximately twenty different denominations and has pastured ten Methodist churches, one Assembly of God church and the Olena Community Church, as well as the Advent Christian Church of Galesburg, Illinois and Christ Community Church of Galesburg, Illinois. Reverend Grimes holds credentials with the Evangelistic Messengers Association and has for many years. John first was married to Marilyn P. Detrick and she passed away in June of 1994. He later married Esther L. Detrick on September 28, 1996 in Monmouth, Illinois and she survives. John had a passion for the bagpipes and wearing a kilt. He had piped in over one hundred and fifty towns in three different states. He is a member of the International Charismatic Bible Ministries and has served as Manager of the Monmouth College Bagpipe Band of which he was a member, and Co-Director of the Youth Bible Camp at Southeast Iowa Boys Scout Camp. He is survived by his wife Esther Grimes of Monmouth, and two sons David of Monmouth, IL; and Daniel of Midwest City, Ok. There are six grandchildren. Three sisters survive, Duska Shaw of Pittsfield, IL; Nancy McFarland of Clayton, MO; and Hallie (David) Brown of Pontiac, IL; One brother survives , Jerry (Jane) Grimes of Pittsfield, IL and a number of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, first wife Marilyn, one brother Tom, and a sister Helen. Services:A funeral service will be on Monday at 10:00 am November 28, 2011 at the First Christian Church of Monmouth, with interment in Olena Cemetery. His family plans to receive friends at Turnbull Funeral Home on Sunday afternoon 11/27 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. A memorial fund is being established by his family.
