Richard A. Bowman, age 82, of Monmouth, Illinois, passed away on Monday afternoon, June 27, 2016 at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville, Tennessee while he was vacationing at Smokey Mountain State Park. "Dick" was born on December 4, 1933 in Monmouth and is the son of Algot J. and Maxine M. Kobler Bowman, Richard was raised and attended local schools and was a graduate of Monmouth High School with the Class of 1951. He then attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and graduated from Monmouth College. Richard married Joyce Lee McCullough on December 2, 1966 in Wisconsin. She preceded him in death. Dick is an active member of First Lutheran Church in Monmouth, Illinois. Dick spent many years in various capacities for the Bowman Shoe Company, headquartered in Monmouth with stores throughout Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Since retiring in the 1990's, he kept busy with many business ventures and inventions. He also advanced from frequent letter-to-the-editor submitter to columnist for the Daily Review Atlas. His column, "Caring" was very appropriately titled, as he consistently communicated views that articulated his devotion to Monmouth, the United States, and wishes that all people be treated well. He died as he lived, seeking fun and adventure and not wasting a moment of life. He is survived by his daughter, Pamela J. Ide and her fiancé Tom Best of Monmouth, Illinois and his son, William (Liezl) Bowman of Champaign, Illinois. His grandchildren, Heather and Jacob Ide of Monmouth, and Dylan Bowman of Champaign IL. Ann Toal, Jeannie Weber, and Dareann Pettis, all of Monmouth, Illinois, were also special to him. His Sister in Law Shirley Camp is also surviving in Chicago Heights, IL. He is preceded in his death by his parents, wife Joyce, and three brothers. Visitation His family plans visitation and to receive friends for the hour prior to the service at the back of the Church on Friday, 9:30 am to 10:30 am. Memorial Service A memorial service is planned for 10:30 AM on Friday, July 8, 2016 at the First Lutheran Church in Monmouth. Cremation was accorded in Tennessee. In Lieu of Flowers, memorial funds are being established for either Strom Center, Jamieson Community Center, or the First Lutheran Church of Monmouth, Illinois.
