Robert William Ewing, age 70, passed away at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, on August 7, 2010 at 2:05 pm. Robert was born May 31, 1940 in Galesburg, Illinois and is the son of William Samuel and Myrtle Lucille Peterson Ewing. He was raised and educated in Galesburg where he attended area schools. He was married on June 25, 1977 to Shirley I. Phillips in Oquawka, Illinois. Robert first was employed as a custodian at Monmouth High School in Monmouth, IL. He then worked as a steel electrical beam fabricator at Anchor Metals in Ft.Madison, Iowa until they closed the business in 1987. In 1990 Robert began work at Burlington Basket Company as both a laborer and also as night watchman until his retirement in 2002 due to his health. Robert loved going to 34 Raceway and watching the races, especially watching the cars his son help build. Surviving is his wife Shirley I. Ewing of Biggsville, Illinois; four sons, Bill Ewing of Biggsville, IL., Tim Ewing in Wisconsin, Ron (Phyllis) Mortimer of Oquawka, IL., and Kevin Mortimer also of Biggsville, IL There is one daughter surviving Celinda (Kevin) Snelson of Keokuk, Iowa. and nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters Ruth (Joe) Elder in Panama City, FL., Lucille Ewing of Galesburg, IL., and Dorothy Nolan of St.Louis, MO. His sister in law survives Wilma Ewing of Murphysboro, IL. and a number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Preceding Robert in his death would be his parents, brother Jack, and one daughter. Services:A funeral service will be on Thursday August 12, 2010 at 2:00 pm at the Turnbull Funeral Home in Biggsville, Illinois. Cremation is to follow the funeral service. His family plans to receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday prior to the funeral from Noon to 2:00 pm. A memorial fund is being established at a later date by his family.
