Robert M. Smith, Jr., 88, of Kirkwood, Illinois, passed away at 1:05 a.m., Thursday, February 07, 2008, at OSF Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth. Robert was born on October 4, 1919 in Kirkwood, the son of R. Miles and Ruth Elizabeth Pape Smith. He was reared on a farm in the Rozetta Township, and he attended Henderson County Schools, he graduated from Biggsville High School. Bob then attended the University of Illinois, were he graduated in 1941 with a Bachelors degree in Agricultural Science. He married Phyllis Nadine Stauffer on August 6, 1950 in Kirkwood, Illinois; she preceded him on August 7, 1987. Bob served his country during World War II, serving in the United States Navy. Robert owned and operated Smith Implement for many years, specializing in Case farm equipment. He was a member of the Westminster United Presbyterian Church, where he was an Elder and Trustee. Bob was also a member of the Monmouth Masonic Lodge #37 AF & AM, the American Legion, Officers Association of America, Fleet Reserves Association, was an active member of the Kirkwood Senior Citizens group and also had an interest in antique tractors. Survivors include: one daughter, Jane Michael and Larry of Kirkwood, one son, Miles Smith of Denver, Colorado, three grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Also surviving are four brothers; Merwin Smith of Monmouth, Dale Smith and Doris of Kirkwood, Donald Smith and Sylvia of Biggsville, Illinois, and James Smith and Janet of Dubuque, Iowa. He is preceded in death by both parents, and his wife, Phyllis. Services:A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 9, 2008, at the Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Kirkwood.
