Roger C. Hawkins, age 65, of Monmouth, Ill., passed away at 8:35 p.m. on Friday, September 25, 2009, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Ill. Roger was born on November 27, 1943, in Russell, Iowa, the son of Harold W. and Dorothy Davis Hawkins. Roger was raised in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in 1962. Roger went to boot camp at Camp LaJune and was a member of the Marine Reserves at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. Roger married Joanne Adams on November 1, 1964, in Chariton, Iowa. Roger worked in signal maintenance for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad for many years. Roger enjoyed playing cards, pitch and cribbage. He was a handyman and was able to fix anything. He enjoyed the V.F.W. and was an avid Hawkeye and the Big 10 fan. Surviving Roger is his wife Joanne Hawkins of Monmouth, daughter Linda (Shane) Jones of Monmouth, son David (Erica) Hawkins of Abingdon, Ill.; seven grandchildren Autumn, Erran, Sadie, Madison, Dakoda, Courtney and Camryn. Also surviving are five brothers, Larry Hawkins of Des Moines, Iowa, Gerald Hawkins of Wallace, North Carolina; Bob (Marti) Hawkins of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Steve Hawkins of Des Moines, Iowa and Mark Hawkins of Ocala, Florida. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Dean and Don. Services:Cremation has been accorded. A celebration of Roger's life will be on Sunday, October 4, 2009, at the J.W. Clendenin Post VFW Post 2301 in Monmouth from Noon to 2:00 p.m. A private family interment of his ashes will be in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery, Monmouth. No viewing or visitation is being planned at the present. A memorial fund is being established for the J.W. Clendenin Post 2301 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
