Roy D. Schwass, age 58, of Kirkwood, Illinois; passed away at 3:40 pm on September 6, 2013 at OSF St.Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois after a brief illness. Roy was born on May 25, 1955 in Orange, CA,. the son of Don G. and Patty Jo (Guilinger) Schwass. He attended Monmouth Schools and graduated from Warren High School in 1973.On May 12,1984 he married Linda Kneen in Monmouth,Illinois, and she survives. Roy served in the United States Air Force from 1973 to 1977 and was stationed in Dover, Delaware and Upper Heyford, England. Roy attended and graduated with honors from both Carl Sandburg College and Western Illinois University with a major in education. He began his teaching career at Dallas City High School teaching science classes from 1988 until 2000. Roy then taught at Yorkwood High School continuing teaching after the consolidation at United High School until the time of his death. He was known as "Papa" Schwass to his students. Roy enjoyed bowling, fishing, auctions, and collecting antiques. Roy loved to go fishing and caught one of the largest "flathead" catfish ever caught, in Lake Warren. Survivors include his wife Linda of Kirkwood, IL, two daughters, Teresa and Kristy Schwass also at home, and a granddaughter, Emery Corvaia, all of Kirwood. His mother Patty of Lake Warren, survives with two brothers, Jim (Lorraine) Schwass of Toluca,Il.and Les (Rita) Schwass of Kirkwood. Two sisters Jan (Kenny) Koehler of Mendon, Illinois, and Sue (Armando) Galvan of Lake Warren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents. Services:A funeral service is planned for Wednesday,September 11, 2013 at 10:30 am at United High School Gymnasium near Monmouth and will be conducted by Pastor Suzanne Geer. A visitation with the family present will be on Tuesday evening, September 10,2013 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at United High School. A memorial fund has been established for United High School.
