Ruth H. Lewis, age 87, a long time resident of Gladstone, IL., currently of Aledo, Ill., passed away at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2009, at the Aledo Rehab and Health Care Center, Aledo. Ruth was born on May 28, 1922, in Hamilton, Illinois, the daughter of John H. and Helen Pfeiferling Dorethy. Ruth was raised in Hamilton and graduated from Hamilton High School. Ruth married Carroll E. Lewis November 29, 1941, in Mephis, Missouri. He preceded her in death on February 7, 1983. For over 25 years, Ruth served as a clerk in the Gladstone Post Office and as Post Mistress at both Carman and Gladstone. Ruth was a member of the Auxillary's of the Gladstone VFW Post and later the Mercer County VFW Auxillary. Ruth enjoyed going to the boat, and the Cubs, the Bears, the Bulls and the Illini. Her home, family, and grandchildren were her greatest joy. She is survived by one son, Jack (Frances) Lewis of Gladstone, Illinois and one daughter Barbara (Michael) Millar of Aledo, sister, Betty (Ellis) Symmonds of Peoria, Ill., and brother John (Doris) Dorethy of Hamilton, 6 grandchildren Shane, Trent, Jennifer, Amy, Laurie and William, 13 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Preceding Ruth in death are her parents, husband, two sisters, and two brothers. Services:A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka, Illinois. Interment will be in the Oquawka Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday during the day at Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka. The family will be present to receive friends prior to the service from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at Turnbull's. A memorial fund is being established for the Mercer County VFW Auxiliary Post #1571.
