Shirley Ann Bowman, age 73, of Oquawka, Illinois, passed away at 10:55 p.m. on Friday, October 16, 2009, in the University Hospital in Iowa City, Ia. Shirley was born May 12, 1936, in Indiana the daughter of Paul and Essie Maxfield. Shirley moved to the Burlington, Iowa area in the 1940's. She continued her education in Danville, Ia., and graduated from Danville High School in 1954. She married John D. Bowman on July 30, 1955 in Burlington. He survives. Shirley was homemaker. Working for the Burlington Bus Lines as a secretary was her first employment. After her family was raised she served as a secretary for 15 years for the Oquawka Water Department retiring in 1992. Shirley was very active in the Oquawka United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. Her family and her church were her life. Surviving Shirley are her husband John D. Bowman of Oquawka; one daughter Vicky L. (Kirk) Thompson of Burlington; three sons Michael D. (Diane) Bowman of Bartlett, Ill.; Randy J. Bowman of Columbus, Ohio and Chris A.. Bowman of Washington, D.C.; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren and her mother Essie Hafner of Canton, Georgia. Also surviving are one sister Barbara (Dale) Mercer of Canton, Georgia; two brothers Jim Maxfield of Louisiana and Paul D. Maxfield of Pueblo, Colorado as well as a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Preceding Shirley in her death are her father, one sister, one niece and one nephew. Services:A funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21, 2009, at the Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. Her family will be present to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, at Turnbull's. A memorial fund is being established for the Oquawka United Methodist Church.
