Shirley Jean Vaughn

Shirley J. Vaughn, age 90, of Monmouth, Illinois passed away at 4:55 pm on September 30, 2014 at the Monmouth Nursing Home in Monmouth, Illinois. She was born on August 21, 1924 in Galesburg, Illinois and is the daughter of Vaughn V. "V.V." and Helen F. Bjorkman Smith. She was raised in Galesburg where she attended local schools and graduated from Galesburg High School with the class of 1942. She first was married to Warren Schoning on April 23, 1944 and he then preceded her in death July 20,1972. She later married James Hartzell of Monmouth in 1978 and he preceded her in 1980. Lastly she was married to Robert Vaughn on March 25, 1089 and her preceded her in death in 1994. Shirley was first employed in Galesburg by Butler Manufacturing for several years. She then worked at Galesburg High School for a time and later worked for World Book Encyclopedia. Lastly she was partners in the V.V. Smith Oil Company of Monmouth, Illinois until her retirement. She was baptized and conferred at Trinity Lutheran Church in Galesburg, IL and is a member of First Lutheran Church in Monmouth, Illinois where she served as Sunday School Teacher, sang in the Choir, and served on many Church committees. Shirley in earlier years was Girl Scout Leader while her daughters were young... 1950s. She also was a member of Business and Professional Women of Monmouth, Illinois. Shirley and Warren " Butch " Schoning built one of the first permanent residences at Lake Warren. Through the years she enjoyed hosting many family gatherings on the lake. Preparing memorable meals was a special joy for everyone. Shirley enjoyed sharing her baked goods with others, being especially noted for her mince meat pie during the holidays. She enjoyed the home and cherished the memories of times gone by when family and friends were close. She is survived by two daughters, Karen Stauffer (Ron) of Owensboro, KY. and Linda Gibson (John) of Rockford, Illinois. Her step-daughter also survives, Janet Rule (Larry) of Winter Garden, FL. also survives. She has grandchildren, Steven Sprout (Barbara), Robert Sprout (Terri), and Jason Sprout (Tracy) and Kathleen Weeks (Tim) John W. Gibson (Theresa) Angela Bobzien (Benjamin), Rob Rule, and Jon Rule surviving. There are numerous great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. She is preceded in her death by her parents, husbands, granddagutherJill Christine Gibson, and sisters, Barbara Anne Burns and Patricia Annette Schultz. Services:A funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Saturday October 11, 2014 at the First Lutheran Church in Monmouth, Illinois. Interment will be in the Monmouth Cemetery. Her family plans a visitation for the hour prior to the service on Saturday receiving friends at the church from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. Memorial funds are being established for either First Lutheran Church in Monmouth, or Monmouth Nursing Home.
